So Long Farewell...

Well it has been a great 6 months with all of you. Carrie and I have had so much fun creating challenges and samples for all of you. After much thought we both feel that it is time to pack up 3DDC. We know we have a great idea here as far as a challenge blog, but our players have been less and less each month. Maybe it is just a timing thing and who knows maybe you will see us again in the future. We appreciate all of you who have posted comments and entries each week.

Yes, as Pam has stated above, it has been an amazing 6 months. Thank you to all who have played with our challenges. We have so enjoyed doing these and were so thrilled to see such creative ladies play along. Maintaining a challenge blog is not always an easy task. There is much planning involved in preparing challenges, procuring sponsors, and maintaining the site itself. We have been very blessed to have found such great sponsors over these past months and were thrilled with their products and ideas. But, alas, sometimes things don't always work out as you'd initially intended. And, with the players becoming fewer and fewer, it was clear that maybe this blog wasn't quite working....just yet! I believe it is a timing thing and I'm certain you'll see Pam and I again in the future!

Bookmark Challenge Winner

I loved using Pink Persimmon's clear polymer stamps. The ink does not bubble up on the stamp, which happens on a lot of the cheaper brands of clear stamps. Corner Bookmark Challenge Extended!

This must be a crazy time of the month for everyone, so....we are extending this challenge for a few more days. You NOW have until this Sunday, February 28, 2009 at 9PM MST to turn in your bookmark. I am super excited about this extension, because I want to show you my bookmark. I lost the hard drive in my computer and haven't been able to put any of my pictures up. Fingers crossed I will have it in my hot little hands by this weekend.

Corner Bookmark Challenge

I love to read. Books, magazines, newspapers, blogs....I just love it. One thing, however, that I'm always needing is a bookmark. So, this week, Pam and I are challenging you to make a corner bookmark.

For some reason I am having a huge problem getting the template uploaded but I'll explain how this is made.

1. Start with a piece of 4" x 4" cardstock.

2. Mark 2" on three of the four sides of the square.

3. Fold in on the 2" markers to make a point.

4. Tape the triangles together and cover.

For Carrie's sample, she used the set Little Cuties from Pink Persimmon - isn't that little dog adorable? I can just see this being used in a young child's book!

Hanging Heart Gallery

This was a great, and timely, challenge, don't you agree?

For Carrie's sample she went with a "wee" heart. She used punches instead of the template to make this small hanging heart. She used the Little Cuties and Swirl Journal sets from Pink Persimmon on this sample and the little candy on the front of heart is just so cute!

Hanging Heart Challenge

Happy February! Can you believe we are onto our second month of the 2009 already?!
For our first challenge this month we have made a template for you to make the ever so popular
"Hanging Heart" made from a "Petal Card" template. A cute little basket that you can fill with all kinds of Valentine treats for your loved ones. Just print out the template, cut two petal cards, score two of the flaps to get your heart shape. Attach folded flaps to a strip of paper measuring of 2"x 8 1/2" scored in half at 4 1/4".

Notebook Challenge

This week I thought we'd take a break from folding and templates and such and do something that is easy for everyone!

We all have notebooks sitting around that we are using or just saving to make beautiful or, alternatively, we all have dollar stores nearby where we can find a very inexpensive book for this challenge!

Carrie decided to use a very simple book from her local dollar store.

Treat Pouch Challenge

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

After a brief hiatus, Pam and I are back! For this challenge, we thought we'd put something out there that everyone can make - whether you have cardmaking supplies or not.

This great treat pouch can be made with designer paper, cardstock, construction paper or just plain old copy paper (which I'm sure you'll dress up a bit).

For my sample this week, I used designer paper and started with a 6x6 square. This is very important, you MUST start with a square piece of paper. I dressed it up with some cardstock layered inside and matching embellishments.

When putting this post together, I tried to give you a great template and then remembered that I'd received many comments on how actually seeing it is better so I decided to do a "video template" for this challenge. Check it out!

Try this out and start with any size square you want! Just make one and come back with a link to your blog by Tuesday, Jan 13th at midnight MST.

Holiday Idea #6

I love to give gift cards over the holidays - just way easier sometimes than racking my brain to find that perfect something for someone!

When I get a gift card I always love to dress it up special - so this year, I used special tins that I have had in the back of my closet for what seems like decades!

You can use any size tin and your imagination and you too can accomplish a beautiful gift card holder.

Holiday Idea #5

So, for many of us, next week will bring a big dinner table filled with family and friends. So, why not dress it up? For this Holiday Idea, I'd love to share some quick and simple decor ideas for your dinner table.

I used very little supplies but kept with a specific colour palette to be in keeping with the holidays. In this photo you'll see I've made:

napkin ring
place card
wine charms

Now, the place card photo piece can be made into a gift tag or tree ornament simply by adding a piece of ribbon to the back!

Holiday Idea #4 Match Book

Time for another holiday treat idea...a cocoa match book. Another very simple packaging idea for a sweet little treat. I took the cocoa packet as a guide for the match book and cut my card stock to 7 1/2" x 5". I scored the card stock at 1" and 4 1/4" (along the long side) then wrapped it around the cocoa packet. I stapled the edge of the packet inside the small flap, which also allows the top flap to tuck inside and stay shut. I added some pattern paper from Stampin' UP!, a bow and little matching tag and voila! Try this out with any filler, such as tea, bag of M&M's, even a gift card (just tape the gift card inside to secure). Lets see some of your ideas!

Holiday Idea #3

A fun little box you create from a simple 6"x 6" square of card. This box is so easy and quick and can be filled with candy or a small ornament. You can make them for your girlfriends or make it masculine for a secret santa gift. Check out the directions here and make some yourself. Carrie and I would love to see your creations!

Holiday Idea #2

Well I'm back! Thankfully this is not an audio post - I've got a horrible cold and sound terrible. But, nonetheless, here is a fun craft to get you in the holiday mood!

This cute purse is made using my Sizzix Big Shot and the Scallop Envelope Die! Really quick and simple and these can be made for any occasion.

How about a little Advent tree with 25 little purses hanging...can't you just see it?

Holiday Idea #1

Pam and I have both been super busy lately and have made an "executive decision" about December. As we know you are all busy as well, we are going to just post some great quick and simple holiday 3D ideas over the next couple of weeks every few days. You are more than welcome to make a sample of the idea and link back into the comments section or just take the idea and run with it!

For our first idea, I decided to show something that I'd done at a local demo meeting as well as I've used recently at some workshops. This is a great way to dress up some simple treats for any occasion!

All I did here was take a few nuggets (but you can use any candy) and put them into a cello bag with a bit of filler. Then I took a 1" x 12" strip of textured cardstock, folded it over and added a brad. I then used punches and various stamps to make a top.

These would be great for a classroom or on the table for Christmas dinner filled with holiday candy!

Papertrey Ink winner

Our fabulous November sponsor, Papertrey Ink sent Carrie and myself one of their egg boxes to decorate. My plan was to cut some of the holly with red berries off of the bush we have in the yard and make the box into a holiday center piece. The holes in the top of the box make a great divider and will hold up bunches of flowers or branches very well. SO, it started snowing yesterday and hasn't stopped, that means my bush is covered! So imagine this little box filled with bright green leaves and vibrant red berries. I stamped some of the trees from "Merry & Bright" one of Papertrey Ink's wonderful stamp sets. I stamped the images and cut them out, decorated them with a white gel pen, added some ribbon and rhinestones to finish. These egg boxes are great and can be used in so many different ways. BackTrack Challenge

For Carrie's project this week, she went WAY back to challenge one - the 2468 box. With the holidays coming, we all have lots of events to attend with lots of bottles of wine to bring along. Lots of great samples this week! We hope you found this project easy yet enjoyable.

For my second sample I was inspired by the Merry & Bright set from Papertrey Ink. I just loved the shape of these holiday trees. I used a 12x12 sheet of cardstock and made each side 4x4. I used my Coluzzle to round the tops of each side and nestled them together on top. I was inspired by Kristina Werner's Challenge for the colours and of course, I glittered the pants off it (not that you can tell from the photos, however).

For Pam's second sample....
She went for a faux metal basket. This little box was made with gold card stock and embossed with gold embossing powder. The little snowflake stamp is from the set "Rustic Snowflakes" from Papertrey Ink. A simple 6" x 1" strip of paper makes the handle for this little basket. A scalloped punch for the tops and threading some organdy ribbon through the side holes finishes off this project.

Here is a very simple box for you to make this week. We hope you will have fun making a bunch of these easy boxes and post the link here on our blog. You can make these any size you want. In the template, each square is 2 1/4" on each side but you can increase or decrease the size as you'd like.

This is the box that I made decorated using our "Sponsor OF The Month", Paper Trey Ink's wonderful stamp set called "Rustic Snowflakes". I stamped the image using white craft ink and embossed with White EP (both from Stampin' UP!). Super simple and a great little treat box, which would be great for a Secret Santa gift. I can't wait to see what you will come up with!

For my box I used "Polka Dot Basics" from Paper Trey Ink - these stamps ROCK! I was able to make a great dotted background for this box.

I used a 9" x 9" piece of heavy cardboard (the kind that comes with a pack of designer paper) for my box and added a dotted butterfly from Stampin' Up!'s Flight of the Butterfly to keep with the dotted theme. These are super fun and easy and I'm hoping to see lots of entries this week in our gallery this week!

Nugget Box Gallery

Where are all the nuggets? Yes, we understand that these are hard to find but how could you all resist making these boxes? They are just adorable!

So, we've decided to extend this challenge for one more week and encourage you all to try to make one and fill it with whatever! Remember there is a gift certificate for Penguin Pants Stamps up for grabs!!

For my second sample, I thought I'd do something fun and unexpected. However, I decided to play it "safe".

I used the 1 x 2 nugget template and made three drawers inside. I used brads as handles and you can see I used my Penguin Pants stamps to bar code the "money".

For my box I decided to use the template which holds ten nuggets. I didn't have any nuggets so I filled my box with Peanut Butter M&M's in fun Halloween colors. I also used Penguin Pants stamps to decorate my box.

Nugget Box Challenge

With Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas all sneaking up on us, Pam and I tried to figure out what to challenge you with that could be used for all three of these occasions. We also love chocolate and needed to put that into the challenge as well.

So, this week's challenge is Nugget Boxes. We found a great link on SCS posted by Chris Simon and were thrilled as she's given various shapes and sizes so you all can decide which size you'd like to do!

For my sample, I went with the 4 x 2 size (meaning you can get 2 rows of 4 nuggets) and used my Penguin Pants stamp sets Halloween Hang Ups and Spooky Spooks to make a great Halloween candy treat perfect for a neighbor, babysitter or teacher.

I usually don't like the look of "wacky" ribbon but for Halloween, I think its okay. I used the "frayed ribbon" technique on some black grosgrain. I used some great Halloween designer paper from Stampin' Up! and covered the nuggets inside with paper to match.

Unfortunately Pam has had to call in sick this week. As soon as she is feeling better she will post her sample.

Mini Book Gallery & Great News!

Great work everyone!

I did something a little silly for my second try at this book. I got an idea and got it done but didn't use the absolutely fabulous Penguin Pants stamp sets that were sitting on my craft desk. Therefore, I'll be treating you to a very cool card I made with them after my second sample of the One Little Book.

I started with designer paper this time and adhered some of the pages together to end up with two pockets in the centre in which I put two tea bags. I adhered the outer edges to a piece of chipboard to make a cover and topped it with a die cut Top Note from my Sizzix. I punched two holes in the bottom and tied them loosely so it stays together as a book.

I added two little envelopes to add sugar or whatnot and adhered them inside. I then printed off "Teas I Love" and some lines on my printer and stamped a great big teapot and there you have it. A great little gift for someone who loves their tea!

Now, for my card - this was a fun one! Granted it was a little hard to take a photo due to the clear front, I think you get the idea! I used Spooky Spooks and Halloween Hang Ups for this card and made a clear front that is attached with a "faux fence" hinge. I used my arrow punch from SU to make this fence which is very similar to the fence in the Penguin Pants stamp set. The lower piece of green is part of the card itself and the clear cover is just a front attached on the inside. Make sense? Then putting all the great stamps in behind it
make the ghost look like its flying. So much fun!

For Pam's mini album she used the Penguin Pants stamp set called "Altered Labels" inked with Versa Mark and embossed with white embossing powder on pattern paper. For the inside the two sections that are open at the top she cut about a half an inch short then adhered the sides so that a tag can fit inside. The rest of the pages are for pictures and the very last page has a pocket for a gift card. This will make a fun brag book with the bonus of a little gift as well! Instead of a belly band or piece of ribbon to keep this book shut Pam used a giant paper clip to go with the kind of funky industrial look.

Penguin Pants Mini Book

Can you believe it is October already?! Boy how time flies when you are having fun and boy are we having fun with our Penguin Pants stamps! Penguin Pants is 3D Design Challenge's "October Sponsor" and Carrie and I have had a blast making this their fabulous clear stamps.

For this weeks challenge Carrie has a great mini album template for you. Download the template, create your version of this album and post it to your blog or other online gallery. Leave us a comment here on this post with a link to your creation, you have until October 7, 2008 9PM MST (-7GST).

One Little Book Template

For Carrie's mini album she used the "Altered Labels" set from Penguin Pants. Her daughter recently went away to Brownie camp and she wanted to make a great little keepsake album so she could remember this very momentous first camping trip. She used the colours that are in keeping with the Brownies (orange, brown, navy) and used the pattern pretty much to the letter. You'll see from the inside photo that most pages are blank - some are stamped with the... stamps but most pages are left for her daughter to write stories and add pictures.

For my album I used "Halloween Hang ups" from Penguin Pants to decorate the cover of this mini album. After I stamped the images the scene reminded me of Van Gogh's "Starry Night" painting. So when I colored the sky, moon and tree I tried to imitate the pattern that Van Gogh used. Of course my little creation isn't anywhere near as brilliant as the famous artist, but I like the way it turned out. I left the pages inside blank so that I can add photos that will be taken this Halloween. This little book will be a great gift to relatives out of town who don't see our family often.

As you know, we like to put blogs In The Spotlight mid-month and we've seen a ton of different blogs. We were so impressed with one that we asked her to be a Guest 3D Designer this month - introducing Melissa McCarthy!

Melissa was given the template of the month to work with and boy did she come up with something super fantastic!

Here is a brief write up on her project in her own words:

It's hard to believe that a sheet of 12x12 cardstock (with an 8 4.5 inch cover) can turn into a whole little book, but it works with the "One Little Book!" I knew I wanted to make a little button book gift set. (It's for keeping track of the extra buttons & fixtures that come with clothes.) This book was perfect for a button book, because the pages are nice & sturdy when you make it from cardstock, so it holds the buttons really well.

Daily Window Bag Winner

Pam's idea for this bag is similar to many of our players this week. A note book with just the right measurements to fit in the clear pocket of our wonderful Urban Tote bag. Pam decorated the cover of this notebook, which also includes a matching pen, using rub-ons and felt letters. This notebook will be used for inspirational notes, such as color combos and layouts that she comes across in everyday settings. It is never a bad time to jot down that great color combo you might see at Starbucks or Target, inspiration is all around us. Oh and this great little notebook was found at Target for $2.49...what a bargain!

My idea was slow in coming but once I figured it out in my head, I was good to go! My mom (who is not a crafter) found these great little frames at a store recently and purchased them for me (thanks mom). I cut out a backing with a piece of scrap cardboard and covered it with some cardstock. I drew out the tree on my own (really the most drawing ability I have) and added different colour scallop circles for the tree. I made little inserts for the frames and added a little robin as they usually reside in trees.

This front is not just pretty - but is hides something very special - a grandma brag book! The is the cover and I've used my Zutter to bind a bunch of pages together for a grandparent (not saying which one) to bring out and share!

Daily Window Bag "The Challenge"

Time for another challenge, this one is a little different though. Design anything 3D style that will fit into the pocket of this bag. The measurements of this pocket is 8" tall x 5 1/4" wide. The best part about this challenge is whomever comes up with the most unique creation will win a brand new Urban Tote Bag just like the ones here.

I can not say enough wonderful things about our sponsor this month, Daily Window Products. Both of my boys own their backpack, which they designed a page of their own to put in the pocket. I have their "Very Necessary Tote" which I use as a purse and keep a Mini Catalog in for advertising. I also have the Urban Sport tote bag, which I am using for my portable 8X8 scrapbook pages.

What is a portable scrapbook page you ask, well here is my sample. It is a scrapbook page measuring 8"x8" when flat and when folded up is 8"x 5 1/4"ish. Here is how you do it, take a piece of 8"x8" paper score at 5" and again at 6 1/2". All I did was accordion fold the score lines so I could move the side over, so I have a decorative side and my photo showing. When I flatten my page I can pull my journaling out from behind my photo (which I made into a pocket) and voila a layout that I can put flat into my scrapbook. Super easy!!

Carrie used a much loved craft item for her project - chipboard. These are the chipboard pieces from the
SU catalogue that she has had for quite some time now and has finally pulled them out of her craft cupboard and has decided to use them for this challenge. Nice thing is they totally fit the pocket of her Urban Sport Tote bag. At first thought, she thought this would make a great gift for a new mom to tote around all the necessities that come with a new baby. And, once you're done with this little gem in the pocket, add another piece to the back and punch holes in the top with your crop-a-dile and you've got a great desktop picture for any office or on a shelf adorning a little ones room at home.

Wowza look at you guys create! Like Carrie said, the first time we met IRL I made a "One Sheet Box" for her as a special swap. Look at where that little box has brought us... together on this blog...awwww bunny!

Here is my altered sample of the "One Sheet Box". I absolutely love this fun little box, because you can do so much with it! For my piece I just changed the score mark on the longer sides to 1 1/2". This made the box much wider and will fit A2 size cards as a gift. Instead of folding the sides in I cut the 4 1/2" & 6 1/2" score lines up to the 1 1/2" score mark and folded that little square up. I then took the two left over flaps and adhered them together on top of the small square giving a nice clean side.

Carrie was a bit of a keener this week and made two variation samples of the one sheet box. For the first one, she in addition to scoring the 41/2 and 6 1/2 on the 11" side, she also scored 1" and 2" in from each end. This way, she could fold the tops in to close the box. She finished it with a belly band made of ribbon.

For her second sample, Carrie cut her initial piece of cardstock down to 10" x 7 1/2". She used the same measurements and made a smaller box. Like her first sample, she scored in on each side and made a small gable box. She punched two holes on the top with her Crop-A-Dile and threaded the ribbon through to close the box. On this and the previous sample, she also adhered the sides together on the inside to keep things together a bit better. I will be the first to say it, both of Carrie's projects gorgeous!

One Sheet Box Folding Video a la Carrie

One Sheet Box Challenge

Ready for more? I know you are! This week's challenge is the One Sheet Box! Now, what do you need to do this? Well, the free template below and one sheet of 8 1/2 x 11 paper or cardstock. I know you've got that!

Pam and I have been playing with this template for a while now and, actually, when we first met, she made one of these for me and I still have it so, I think that'll be my sample this week (cheeky and lazy of me, but its so darn cute!).

This first box to the left is Pam's creation. She stuck to the original template, zig zag cut the top of the box and added 4 holes to both the front and back sides to lace ribbon through. Another wonderful box for small goodies.

For mine, I decided to try a few things that I had on hand and just have not been wanting to use, for various reasons. I used a great pocket slider and made a tag that can be pulled out. Along the side, I used some letter brads but cut the backings off of them and just added them on with glue dots. I also closed the box using a belly band versus tying it like Pam did. This little box is extremely versatile!

One Sheet Box Template

One little tip, on the template you'll see those little diagonal score lines. I didn't use them, I just folded the side inside centre fold down to the outer edge - hard to describe and I'll try to come up with some photos or a video in the next day or so.

Milk Carton Challenge Gallery & our Top 3D's

Seems this week's challenge was a bit tougher, not just for all the players but for myself and Pam! I know I made quite a few 'tries' before I decided which design I liked. And, for my variation on the sketch, I knew I had to come up with something BIG and different.

I decided to only use a few of the scores from the template to come up with a mini tag book. I scored at 2 1/2", 5", 7 1/2" and 10" on the short side and then up 2" on the bottom to get this great little fold out tag album.

For Pam's triangle box, she scored as directed leaving off the score at the 6 1/2" mark and the diagonal score lines. Plus the first whole section and 2nd and 3rd section tops were cut off. As shown in the photo here to the right.

Think of all the fabulous new creations you can make just by altering a template by a few steps. You should try it!

2468 Box Challenge Gallery , Winner and New Template!

Wow guys, that was a lot of entries for our very first challenge. Pam and I are thrilled you are so far enjoying this new blog and it's challenges. We decided that after a week of creating, we too need to create again so here are our second samples. In each sample, we played with the template just a bit to make something completely different.

For Pam's sample she used a piece of pattern paper measuring 6"x 11" and scored every 2 1/2" across instead of 2". Then scored up on the bottom 1 1/2", making the box a little larger. Pam then added a handle and embellishments to finish.

For my sample, I used the same size cardstock (5 1/2" x 8 1/2") and scored the same way on the short side (2", 4", 6" and 8") but on the long side instead of scoring up 2" on one side, I scored 1 1/2" in on both sides. It made this great little box with top flap!

Milk Carton Template

For my sample, I decided to brayer three different colours on some vellum cardstock and fold it into the milk carton. This gave a sort of sunrise/sunset effect. I embossed a blossom stem and added a Chinese character. I can just see this filled with loose tea or fortune cookies!

Pam's sample uses Whisper White card stock

and pattern paper . The top portion was colored a pale shade of blue using a marker, then stamped with beach themed stamps. Pam embellished with different flowers, stickers, brads and a cute little crab eyelet to finish off her beach themed milk carton.

Welcome to 3D Design Challenge. We are very excited to share fun and inspirational 3D creations and challenges with you.

Carrie and I would first like to thank Renee for taking Carrie's photo and creating our banner and blinkies. Please feel free to copy our blinkie and attach it to your own site, to show your support and spread the word. The more the merrier, which also means more inspiration for us all!

My box was made with double sided pattern paper and would be fun to fill with goodies for a party favor or small gift .
